February 26, 2021

Despite that earlier biography and a recent documentary, “Billie,” two other movies come to mind that complement the key elements of this one: “Judas and the Black Messiah,” another story about the government’s ruthless harassment of African-Americans; and “Judy,” Renee Zellweger’s starring vehicle about the later life of Judy Garland. Day, an accomplished singer and songwriter, gives Zellweger a run for her award-winning money, spectacularly capturing Holiday’s voice and phrasing,…

February 26, 2021

The film co-stars Olivia Colman (“The Crown”) as his understandably harried daughter, Anne, trying as she might to allow her dad, Anthony, to stay out of a facility, but struggling with the demands on her time and catering to his mercurial needs. Moreover, her situation — and indeed, the cast of characters — keeps changing as we see the world through his eyes, unsure of what to believe about whether…

‘Crisis’ review: Armie Hammer and Gary Oldman star in a ‘Traffic’-style treatment of the opioid epidemic

February 26, 2021

The casting is certainly impressive. Hammer portrays Jake, an undercover agent trying to catch Fentanyl traffickers, with separate threads featuring Gary Oldman (currently seen in the much-better “Mank”) as an academic who faces a tough decision regarding testing of a supposed “non-addictive” painkiller and Evangeline Lilly as a mom whose son overdoses. Yet as constructed by writer-director Nicholas Jarecki (“Arbitrage”) — in a movie billed as being “inspired by” reality,…
